Course Objectives 1, To introduce the rules of tonal grammar and to develop the ability analyze passages of tonal music,
2, To develop writing skills in a tonal idiom, gaining experience in four-part writing, modulation, etc,
Course Description Review of fundamental materials (keys, scales, intervals, triads and seventh chords, cadences); examination of the various diatonic chords and their harmonic functions in different contexts (including four-part writing, non-chord tones and diatonic sequences); review of common procedures of chromatic harmony (i,e, tonicization, modulation, mode mixture, the Neapolitan chord and augmented- sixth chords).
Course Outcomes Graduate students who successfully pass this course gain the following knowledge, skills, and competencies:
1. Competency in analyzing tonal harmonies with roman numerals,
2. Knowledge of voice-leading in tonal music,
3. Knowledge of the fundamental materials of tonal music (keys, scales, intervals, triads, seventh chords, cadences, etc,),
4. Knowledge of modulation and simple concepts of classical form,
5. Skill in writing music in tonal style
