Course Objectives 1. To provide the basic knowledge and concepts of solid wastes quantity and classifications,
2. Learning the principles of integrated municipal solid waste management, to provide recycling, recovery, treatment and disposal technologies and conceptual design ability of them,
3. To give an ability to plan and conceptual design of old landfill sites rehabilitation,
4. Providing effectively the concepts that are present in solid waste management by laboratory works
Course Description Terminology of solid waste. Integrated solid waste management concept. Characteristics and classification of solid waste. Collection and transport of solid waste. Recovery and recycling of solid wastes. Biological treatment systems (composting, biomethanization). Landfilling. Thermal conversion technologies. Rehabilitation of old landfills. Determination of basic parameters used in solid waste characterization. Application and operation of pilot scale biological solid waste treatment system.
Course Outcomes Students who pass the course will be able to;
I. Comprehend the definitions including legal and administrative aspects of solid waste management,
II. Comprehend the integrated solid waste management system and components, cost analysis,
III. Evaluate the basic principles of quantity and composition of municipal solid waste,
IV. Plan and design of waste collection, transport and recovery systems,
V. Design and operation of biological treatment systems,
VI. Design and operation of landfills as well as old landfills,
VII. Select the suitable thermal conversion technology,
VIII. Analyze and interpret basic parameters used in solid waste characterization by laboratory works,
IX. Design and operate biological processes used in solid waste management.

Other The list of experiments for laboratory work: I- Determination of the Composition of Municipal Solid Waste, II- Composting, III- Sample Preperation for Solid Waste Experiments, IV- pH and Conductivity, V- Total and Volatile Solids, VI- Calorific Value, VII-Determination of Compost Quality

Other Activities:
1. Technical site visiting along the day time during weekend will be held through the İBB Solid Waste Management System (transfer stations, sanitary landfill, leachate treatment plant, recovery and composting plant, energy production facility from landfill gas, refuse derived fuel production facility, inciniration plant for hospital waste, rehabilitation of old landfill site) related to the systems and facilities learnt from the lecture.
2. Experts from a municipality and from a private engineering company will give seminars related to Solid Waste Management and Landfill Design.
